Probably the oldest dish in South Africa. The recipe appeared in 1609 in a Dutch cookbook, has its origins in Indonesia.
Ingredients:
1kg mince (lamb, beef or pork)
1 large onion
30 ml butter or oil
1 thick slice of bread soaked in milk
250 ml milk
12,5 ml curry powder
5 ml turmeric
3 eggs
6 lemon leaves
190 ml seeded raisins or sultanas
62 ml lemon juice
15 ml apricot jam or chutney
Salt & pepper
1 clove of garlic (crushed)
190 ml white wine
Directions:
Saute onion in butter or oil. Mix all ingredients except 2 eggs, milk and lemon leaves. Turn into greased oven dish and stick lemon leaves on top. Bake 160 C for about 45 minutes. Beat eggs with milk, add salt and pepper to taste, and pour over dish. Bake slowly at 150 C for a further 25 minutes, until set and golden brown. Serve with yellow rice, chutney and banana.
